I was fortunate to receive a commission to make several panels for a
private house. The subject specified was deer. We agreed that I should
make a selection of 26cm square trial panels in a variety of styles and
colours which we could then hold up against the house to see which
images suited the best.
I began by sketching the deer in Richmond Park in London. From these
drawings I made at least 20 test pieces which depicted deer in manners
ranging from three dimensional/realistic to graphic/stylized. This page
shows three of these tests. The experiment revealed that black and white
images in a semi-realistic style best suited the house. I then made
several panels for the client, including the one shown which is 104cm x
43cm. The trial pictures remained with me for use in exhibitions.
